Question and Answer:
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. What a lot of people don't realize about makeup artists is that there is not just 'one way' to apply makeup. A great artist will analyze the face and determine what (face shape, features, discoloration, symmetry, etc.) issues need to be addressed or corrected and proceed to adjust any changes.
Examples: correcting an uneven lip, adding shadows to sculpt (define) the face, placing highlights on certain areas to give a radiant glow, to disguise a crooked nose, etc.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. When I finish a client's look, I always look at their reaction, and it always gives me the greatest feeling of satisfaction that I have made them feel so confident and wonderful about themself. That is one of my favorite moments about this career.
I also love getting to meet new people and having the chance to travel to new places.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. I did a live demonstration at a SGK breast cancer event on how to apply a natural face of makeup. One of the demos was about filling/shaping eyebrows. After my eyebrow demo was over, I had a crowd of women come over and thank me for giving them a little piece of normalcy and femininity back in their life. After most of these women go through chemo and radiation, they are usually left with no hair on their eyebrows. Just by showing them how to give them back the look of an eyebrow again, they were extremely grateful and full of joy. It touched my heart so much that I could give them back a little piece of their womanhood.
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. I was working at Sephora while finishing up my Biology degree. I had finally graduated, but none of the jobs I got offered were ever worth leaving Sephora for. My heart and passion was in makeup artistry. That was when I realized I had had my dream job the entire time.
